The Christmas Box
The tradition of having a Christmas tree goes back to the early1800s when Queen Charlotte (queen to George III) set up the tradition of having a candle-lit tree, with presents and ribbons hanging on the branches inside the palace at Windsor. Soon after this, the idea of the Christmas box which children could open on Christmas Eve started. The two soon became familiar rituals in the homes of many well-to-do families. Continue reading

The theme for BHM2021 is ‘Proud to be’ and to celebrate the event, we have invited Dr. Elizabeth Williams to guest author this post. Dr Williams is the author of The Politics of Race in Britain and South Africa: Black British Solidarity and the Anti-Apartheid Struggle (2017) and her edited book Nelson Mandela: Pulling the Branch from a Tree! The Impact of His Legacy on Black Britain and Race in Britain (2022) is going to be published in 2022. Elizabeth is also a librarian at Goldsmiths, University of London. Continue reading
